01Understanding the condition

What is sciatica?

Have you ever felt a sharp pain in your back or spine that radiates down your leg? If so, you may be dealing with sciatica, sciatic nerve pain. It’s a common condition that affects countless people, causing discomfort, numbness, and weakness.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, running from your lower back through your hips and down each leg. When something irritates or compresses it, often a disc issue, tight muscles, or misalignment in the lower spine, you feel it along that whole path.

The good news is there are plenty of ways to get relief. At Cavanaugh Chiropractic in Lafayette, we address the source of the nerve irritation, not just the symptoms, so you can find lasting comfort.

02Signs & symptoms

Signs you might have sciatica.

Sciatica has a distinctive pattern that follows the nerve down the leg. Common signs include:

Pain that radiates from the lower back into the buttock and leg
A sharp, burning, or electric-shock quality to the pain
Numbness or tingling down the leg or into the foot
Weakness in the affected leg
Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, or certain movements
Don't wait
The sooner we get to the root of it, the better your outcome, early care makes a real difference.

Our goal is to find what's irritating the sciatic nerve and relieve that pressure, so the pain settles and stays away. Your plan may include:
Spinal adjustments
Care to restore alignment and motion in the lower spine and relieve nerve irritation.
Spinal decompression
Gentle traction that takes pressure off the disc and the sciatic nerve.
Soft tissue therapy
Hands-on work to release tight hip and low-back muscles that compress the nerve.
Rehab & movement
Exercises to rebuild support and keep the sciatic nerve happy long term.
You don't have to push through the pain.
The sooner we address it, the sooner you're back to feeling your best.
