01Understanding the condition

What is a cervicogenic headache?

If you’ve ever battled a stubborn headache that starts at the base of your skull and creeps forward, wrapping around your head like a vice, you might not be dealing with an ordinary tension headache. You could be experiencing a cervicogenic headache, one that doesn’t actually start in your head, but in your neck.

A cervicogenic headache is a secondary headache, meaning it’s caused by another problem, in this case, dysfunction in the cervical spine. That dysfunction can come from poor posture, a whiplash injury, or joint irritation in the upper neck, and the pain gets referred up into the head.

At Cavanaugh Chiropractic in Lafayette, we see this all the time, patients surprised to learn their persistent head pain is really a neck issue in disguise. The good news is that chiropractic care can often make a big difference.
