01Understanding the condition

What is cervical joint hypermobility?

When most people think of neck problems, they picture stiffness or limited movement. But for some, the issue isn’t restriction, it’s too much motion. Cervical joint hypermobility refers to excessive movement between the vertebrae in your neck.

While extra flexibility might not sound like a problem, it can actually lead to pain, instability, and a cascade of other spinal issues. Without enough stability, the muscles have to work overtime to hold the neck steady, and that leads to fatigue and strain.

At Cavanaugh Chiropractic in Lafayette, we often see this develop after a car crash, especially whiplash-type injuries, but it can also come from repetitive strain, poor posture, or underlying connective-tissue factors. Our focus is on restoring stability, not just motion.
